In clinical practice, we often just have to deal with an ever increasing number of cancers affecting our animals. Dogs and cats, as well as humans, are increasingly showing widespread cancers. From a clinical point of view the only plausible solution would seem to be the classic one: ablative surgery and chemotherapy.

At the moment, the only scientifically proven studies are related to chemotherapy drugs of a different nature but this does not mean, however, that there are no other therapeutic possibilities.

The study of natural medicine and herbs reaches new results every day for both human and veterinary medicine. In particular, new compounds based on herbs and plants known for a long time, represent a valuable aid in contrast to the most common forms of cancer.

One plant, in particular, is attracting the attention of the international scientific world. It is the Artemisia annua. Leaving aside the false claims of some salesmen, according to whom the Artemisia would be able to destroy 98% of the cancer cells in a few hours, it is a plant that has significant therapeutic potential.

To support the effectiveness of treatments based on this herb of Chinese origin are mainly some doctors of the University of California, as reported by the journal Science and Metaphysic Spirit, who have conducted studies that "show that artemisina stops the factor of E2F1 transcription "and intervenes in the destruction of lung cancer cells, which means that it controls the growth and reproduction of cancer cells".

According to Dr. Len Saputo, artemisia is also a "smart bomb against cancer", an intelligent weapon, which would prove effective in destroying 75% of radiation-resistant cancer cells.

Although at first sight one might think of one of those usual "Fake News", there have been studies on the subject since 2001, while more recently in 2011 some experiments have been made in vitro.

"It is like a fantasy, but this result was born thanks to a team from the University of Washington, which conducted research on an ancient Chinese remedy for malaria.

Prof. Henry Lai and his assistant Prof. Narendra Singh probed and evaluated the chemical properties of an artemisia derivative for breast cancer treatment and the results were surprising.

The use of Artemisia as a vermifuge was known in the Far East from memorable time and the same active ingredient had already been tested for some time. As regards the implementation of the plant in the treatment of tumors there is still to be studied, at least as regards humans.

A previous study, which concerned leukemia in cats, had produced even more impressive results: cancer cells were eliminated in 8 hours, in a series of in vitro experiments.

The explanation would seem plausible according to which the effectiveness of artemisia would be correlated to its action of impact on leukemic cells: these in fact have a very high concentration of iron (about 1000 times higher than the other cells).

At the moment, the studies carried out, even if in a relatively small number, have demonstrated the effectiveness of artemisia against two types of cancer: osteosarcoma and mammary tumors in dogs and some leukemic forms in cats.

It must be very evident that it is not the Panacea that solves all ills but its use allows at least to prolong the life of the subjects affected by neoplasia, extending their life.

For a thoughtful owner it is important to be able to give your pet even one more day of normal life.

Artemisia cannot be purchased in pharmacies and given at random as it alone would not be of any use and often the quality of the drugs available easily leaves a great deal to be desired. The mugwort, integrated into an effective protocol, has a cost that, despite the fact that not very high, must be taken into account.

Use of Artemisia annua must be incorporated in a specific protocol to ensure that this plant extract can reach its maximum effectiveness quickly. The protocol lasts at least 2 4-month cycles and also includes the administration of specific supplements. Integrations with Aloe vera and Ganoderalucidum are really positive.

The really positive aspect of Artemisia, compared to definitive chemotherapy is that the natural mugwort-based protocol is completely devoid of side effects, apart from some diarrheal episodes or slight vomiting, nothing else is found.

Choosing such a protocol is a choice that only the owner has. The important thing is because he is informed about everything and makes his own choices for the good of his animal.
